Eulexin is an anti-androgen drug approved for locally confined metastatic prostate cancer.
Testosterone and other male hormones (androgens) stimulate prostate cancer growth. Medical or surgical castration reduces testosterone levels, but other cells in the body can still make androgens. Nonsteroidal anti-androgen drugs like Eulexin bind to androgen receptors on prostate cells and prevent them from working. They are usually combined with GnRH agonists to stop testosterone production.
Dosing Info: Eulexin is a taken as a pill. The usual dose is two capsules taken three times a day.
Common side effects include hot flashes, diarrhea and nausea. Drugs that lower androgen levels testosterone may lead to reduced sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, shrinkage of the testicles and breast pain and enlargement (gynecomastia). Liver toxicity is a potential serious side effect.
