W. Kimryn Rathmell, MD, PhD, is the new director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the federal agency responsible for medical and public health research. A renowned kidney cancer expert and a leader in cancer research and patient care, Rathmell was selected by President Biden to succeed Monica M. Bertagnolli, MD, who left NCI to become the NIH director. Previously, Rathmell was physician-in-chief at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
